Akamai Technologies is a Cambridge, Massachusetts company founded in 1998 by MIT mathematicians who pioneered the content delivery network ("CDN"). The original insight — that the internet would buckle under centralized hosting and that distributed edge servers could speed up delivery — was elegant and prescient. Today the company operates more than 4,300 edge points-of-presence in over 130 countries and roughly 700 cities, and it now sells across three reported solution categories: In plain English: Akamai's old business is selling cheap bytes (delivery) — and that revenue line is shrinking. Its current main business is selling protection from bad bytes (security — DDoS mitigation, web app firewall, bot mitigation, API security, zero-trust).
