Munger Mode rating: 4 out of 5 — Buy. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
We have spent our lives looking for businesses that resemble toll bridges — assets you build once, that customers cannot avoid using, where the tolls go up every year and the maintenance bill stays small. American Tower is about as close to a literal toll bridge as the modern economy offers. It is a landlord of steel poles, and the rent checks come from the handful of companies that carry the world's mobile traffic. The question before us is not whether this is a good business — it plainly is — but whether the debt on the bridge, the concentration of the toll payers, and the price being asked leave enough margin for error. Our answer: the franchise is wonderful, the price is fair verging on attractive, and the leverage is the reason we stop at four stars rather than five.
