Munger Mode rating: 2 out of 5 — Sell. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
Analysts: Warren Buffett & Charlie Munger Price at analysis: ~$261 (Aug 5 close $260.72, +11.4%; ~$263 pre-market Aug 6) Charles River is the largest "picks-and-shovels" supplier to the drug-discovery industry — it breeds the laboratory animals, runs the safety-toxicology studies, and sells the quality-control kits that pharmaceutical and biotech companies need to move a molecule from the bench toward the clinic. It is a real business with a genuine franchise in an unglamorous corner of an essential industry. We like unglamorous. But liking the industry is not the same as wanting to own the stock. When we strip away the excitement of a 55% run over the past year and yesterday's 11% earnings pop, what we find is an average business wearing a wonderful business's price tag.
