Munger Mode rating: 3 out of 5 — Hold. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
We like businesses we can explain to a smart teenager in five minutes, and Fortinet passes that test better than almost anything else in technology. Fortinet sells the locks, gates, and guards for computer networks. Its flagship product is the FortiGate firewall — a box (or, increasingly, a piece of software or a cloud service) that sits between a company's network and the outside world, inspecting traffic and keeping intruders out. Around that core, Fortinet sells subscriptions: FortiGuard security services that continuously update the boxes with intelligence about new threats, and FortiCare technical support. In the June 2026 quarter, product revenue was $773 million and service revenue was $1,275 million — so for every dollar of hardware sold, Fortinet collects roughly $1.65 of recurring, high-margin service revenue, much of it paid years in advance.
