Munger Mode rating: 3 out of 5 — Hold. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
The verdict in one paragraph: This is a very good business — in places a genuinely wonderful one — run by honest, disciplined people. Electric Boat holds one of the most durable franchises in American industry, and Gulfstream is the premier brand in an oligopoly with real pricing power. But Mr. Market has noticed. At roughly 23 times earnings, against a decade in which this stock typically traded at 16–18 times, the price now sits ahead of our estimate of intrinsic value. We would happily hold what we owned. We would not initiate a position at an all-time high the day after a $76.6 billion contract announcement. Wonderful business, premium price: three stars. We like businesses a child can diagram, and General Dynamics passes that test. The company does four things: 1.
