Munger Mode rating: 4 out of 5 — Buy. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
Charlie and I have spent the better part of fifty years saying the same thing: a wonderful business at a fair price beats a fair business at a wonderful price. McDonald's, at $286 a share with the market grumbling about a soft consumer and the Ozempic crowd skipping the drive-thru, sits squarely in the first category. The shares are down roughly 16% from their March high near $342, the 52-week low ($283) was tested only weeks ago, and a fortress-quality global franchisor with one of the most durable moats in American commerce can be purchased for about 23 times forward earnings. That isn't a steal. But it is fair, and when you can buy a great business at a fair price, you do not have to be clever. We rate MCD 4 stars (Buy). Most people, including most analysts, misunderstand what they own when they buy a share of McDonald's. They think they are buying a hamburger company. They are not.
