Munger Mode rating: 4 out of 5 — Buy. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
We have spent our lives looking for businesses that sell something small, critical, and consumed or serviced repeatedly, to customers who cannot afford for it to fail and who would rather not think about it. Mettler-Toledo is such a business. It is the world's dominant maker of precision weighing instruments — laboratory balances that measure to a millionth of a gram, industrial scales, and the inspection systems that make sure there is no metal shard in your candy bar. A lab balance might cost a pharmaceutical company a few thousand dollars against a billion-dollar drug program, yet the entire chain of regulatory documentation rests on that instrument being calibrated and validated. That is the kind of toll bridge we like: tiny toll, essential crossing. The numbers say what the qualitative story implies. Returns on invested capital run in the mid-to-high 20s percent.
