Munger Mode rating: 2 out of 5 — Sell. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
Charlie has a line he likes to deploy when the conversation drifts toward heavy industry: "Show me a business that has to be rebuilt every twenty years and I'll show you a business I'd rather watch from across the room." Nucor is the finest steel company in North America. We will say that without reservation. The men and women who run this company — and the unusual culture they have preserved since Ken Iverson — produce more steel, more efficiently, more safely, and with a more durable cost structure than any large peer in the developed world. Were every steelmaker run like Nucor, the steel industry would still be a difficult industry, but a less destructive one. But that is precisely the problem. The unit of analysis for a long-term owner is the business, and the business of making and selling steel is, in our judgment, structurally inferior.
