PKG is a well-run No. 3 player in the North American containerboard oligopoly. Mark Kowlzan and his team are among the most disciplined operators in the paper industry — they earn cycle-average returns on invested capital that beat both International Paper and Smurfit Westrock, they pay generous dividends, and they run their mills nearer to flat-out than any competitor. None of that, however, changes what PKG fundamentally is: a producer of an interchangeable brown commodity sold by the ton.
