Charlie and I have spent considerable time examining Snowflake — a company that inspires genuine admiration for its engineering achievements and genuine alarm for its economics. What follows is our honest assessment. Snowflake operates a cloud-based data platform that allows organizations to store, process, query, and share data across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The company's core innovation, introduced at its 2012 founding, was the architectural separation of storage and compute — enabling customers to scale each independently and pay only for what they consume. This was, at the time, a genuinely elegant insight. The business model is consumption-based: customers commit to capacity contracts (measured in "credits") and burn through those credits as they run queries, store data, and process workloads.
