Steel Dynamics is, in our judgment, the best-run steel company in America — and we want to say that plainly before we say anything critical, because the people who built this company deserve it. Mark Millett and his team have done nearly everything right for thirty years: they run the lowest-cost mills, they treat employees as partners, they buy back stock aggressively when it is cheap, and they tell shareholders the truth. And yet we arrive at a 2-star rating. The reason is the one Charlie has repeated for sixty years: when a management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.
