Munger Mode rating: 2 out of 5 — Sell. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
We have spent our lives looking for two things in one package: a business with a durable competitive advantage, and managers we would trust with our own checkbook. Smurfit Westrock gives us exactly half of that package. Tony Smurfit and Ken Bowles are, in our judgment, among the best operators in global industry — their record at legacy Smurfit Kappa is the genuine article. But the business they run is a capital-hungry, cyclical, semi-commodity business carrying $13.5 billion of net debt, earning low returns on the enormous capital tied up in it, and currently generating negative free cash flow after a $2.4–2.5 billion capital spending program while borrowing commercial paper to help cover the dividend. Charlie's rule was to buy wonderful businesses at fair prices, not fair businesses at wonderful prices.
