Munger Mode rating: 3 out of 5 — Hold. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
We'll say it plainly up front: Trane Technologies is one of the finest industrial businesses in America — and we do not use that word loosely. It earns roughly 25% on invested capital, converts nearly all of its earnings to cash, holds the leading position in North American commercial HVAC with a service-heavy, recurring revenue model, and is run by managers who count. The Q2 2026 10-Q we've just read is about as clean a quarterly report as an industrial company can file: revenue up 11%, record $12.1 billion backlog, customers literally paying in advance for the privilege of buying its chillers. The problem is the price. At $455 per share, the market is asking us to pay roughly 30 times this year's earnings and accept a free cash flow yield near 3% for the privilege.
