This is one of the simplest businesses we have ever examined, and we mean that as high praise. Vulcan is the largest producer of construction aggregates in the United States — crushed stone, sand, and gravel. You blast rock out of a quarry, crush it, sort it by size, and sell it by the ton to people building roads, warehouses, data centers, subdivisions, and airports. The company also runs downstream asphalt and ready-mixed concrete operations in select markets, but those exist mainly to pull aggregates volume through; aggregates is the business.
