Munger Mode rating: 3 out of 5 — Hold. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
Written in the first person by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, applying our own standards. To be plain about which kind of 3-star this is: Vistra is a good-but-not-wonderful business — a commodity power producer with a genuinely scarce nuclear kernel and outstanding capital allocators — trading at a meaningful, quantifiable discount to what we think it is worth. The discount, not the compounding quality of the franchise, is what would produce the return. That is the "average business at a significant discount" branch of a hold, not the "wonderful business at a premium" branch. Vistra is the largest competitive (unregulated) power generator and retailer in the United States. The business has two halves that are designed to offset each other: Generation.
