Munger Mode rating: 2 out of 5 — Sell. Our own rating from the research report below, on business quality first: moat durability and management, with price separating the top three.
Current Price: ~$431 (May 1, 2026 close) Charlie and I have spent considerable time looking at Western Digital. The post-Sandisk pure-play HDD business is genuinely better than the conglomerate that preceded it — leaner balance sheet, focused capital allocation, a cyclical tailwind at its back, and a respectable duopoly structure with Seagate. We tip our hats to that. But "better" is not "wonderful," and the price at $431 is doing an enormous amount of work assuming the current upcycle is permanent. It is not. Hard disk drives are still a commodity capital-intensive product sold to a handful of buyers who hold enormous bargaining power, with a long-running technological substitution threat (SSDs) that has merely paused, not ended.
